What’s the thing you think about doing with your life all day, every day? The ONE thing that’s so palpable, you can just reach out and touch it. The thing that when you inhale, you come alive with its smell. What’s that ONE thing that would bring you joy if you could only do it day in and day out? You just know you’d be so feezing good at this ONE thing that you could see yourself doing this job or this community service or this talent, 24/7. It’s the ONE thing you dream about while working at your current job. What is it?
It’s not easy working in a profession you’re not psyched about. Or maybe you do your job very well, and you even really LIKE your job, but that umph . . . that pizzazz . . . that spark, is missing. Or maybe you have a side passion you’d like to nurture but your REAL life job keeps getting in the way. Or maybe you have a talent, a God given talent or gift, that was instilled in you ever since sixth grade, well probably since you were born, and you buried it under your backup plan. I know all about backup plans. They’re safe. You fall and they’re there to catch you. And those backup plans become so feezing comfortable that you just stay in them. For years. And that passion you had for the ONE thing that you truly want to do . . . fades.
If you’re worried about your age, don’t. God isn’t. If you think you really can’t indulge in your talent because you have kids and a mortgage to pay, start slowly, maybe after work, early mornings or on the weekends. No one is saying to quit your day job. All I’m saying is to give it a shot. Take that class. Go to that audition. Do that internship. Write that song. Bake that cake. Knit that scarf. Hone in on the passion and the talent God gifted you with.
I heard Steve Harvey on his radio show one early morning as he was delivering an inspirational message to his listeners. He said that if you don’t do something, or start somewhere, then God has nothing to work with. Then my mentor, a little Italian woman who fears absolutely no one but God, told me that if I didn’t do what God gifted me to do, He’d take it away and give it to someone else. And then I watched Kevin Hart on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN channel one Sunday evening. He had the same thought. He said that if you don’t do it, someone else will. Wow.
So what now? What next? Where do you go from here? Just put one foot in front of the other. No more excuses. Start somewhere. Anywhere. Make a list of schools. Research classes. Repair your credit. Practice your technique. So something. Anything. Don’t diss God. He gave you the idea. He gave you the talent. He gave you the passion. One year from now you’ll look back and either say to yourself, “Dag! Look how far I’ve come in one year.” Or you’ll say, “Man, if I had started this from last year, I would’ve been done already.”
Time waits for no one. You’re special in His eyes, but you’re not the only special one. There’s millions out there with your gift. He’s gifted many. The thing is . . . you’ve already realized what your gift is. You KNOW what sets your core on fire. So many others may not have any idea what their gift is. YOU have the upper hand right now. The passion is within YOU. Pull it out. Dig deep and give it birth. You. Can. Do. It. A dream without action is just a dream. Talk without movement is just talk. Don’t diss God. Go do it . . . or else He’ll move on to the next one.
